A September Charlestown trip took me to the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC. I worked down the block from it in the 1990s. My colleagues and I would go for lunch and sit in the courtyard when the weather was nice. I was surprised to see that the courtyard is now covered and the cafe has been completely remodelled. I
t’s been over twenty years since I visited. It was all new for me. I visited the special exhibition, Votes for Women: A Portrait of Persistence, which outlines the more than 80-year movement for women to obtain the right to vote. That exhibition lasts until January 2020. America’s Presidents, a permanent exhibition, houses the nation’s only complete collection of presidential portraits outside the White House. It is moving to see larger than life portraits of our Presidents. I had time for the 20th Century Americans galleries on the third floor. I had never been to the third floor so I was amazed by its beauty. Michaele Obama’s portrait is found there. The courtyard was enjoyable for lunch.
